Irina Poludnenko Exclusives for The Yarn Company

Irina Strikes Again!

We are so lucky! The one and only Irina Poludnenko has created another exclusive masterpiece for us:

The Tempo Pop Art Top.

Pop art? Irina Art! Filatura di Crosa's Tempo yarn reminds us of the Missoni yarn the company had years ago, and this Irina creation? Rothko and Pop Art and Missoni all rolled into one. The feminine sleeves 'top' it all off.

And ofr blanket lovers? The Zara Garter Baby Blanket .

Irina, who has designed for Tahki Stacy Charles and Vogue Knitting (and many others), now does exclusive designs for The Yarn Company as well. HerBeach Shawl in Noro Tanabata

is divine (“no beach necessary”); her Soulwool Soul Hat

is a year-round fave; the world went mad for her One Ball Scarf (in Skacel Zauberball Starke),

and herToxic Waste Tunic,

featuring the Urban Underground colorway from Lorna’s Laces, was a smash at VKL. Other stunning feats of her imagination can be found in our IrinaPoludnenko Exclusives section on our webstore, or on her own website, hatsnothats.com, which she shares with designers Suzan Lee and Eiko Berkowitz.

Irina started her career in design at the tender age of eleven, when she sewed together squares from an unraveled old pink sweater to fashion a cardigan for her baby sister. Irina was happy with her first finished project, and her proud mother kept her first knitting in a pillowcase for many years. Later on, in her later school years, Irina used “real” yarn—ends from a rug manufacturer that were not at all soft, but colorful—and she started to practice Fair Isle knitting. She would run to the local craft store during breaks between classes and spend all her lunch money on that yarn. Irina’s college sweaters were “absolutely crazy,” she says. “I used all leftover yarns and all the techniques that I knew already in one piece. My friends were shocked at the beginning, but asked me to make the same sweaters for them. And I did it—for friends, for boyfriends, for my boss, for my future mother-in-law…” Now, after years of practice, Irina knits everywhere—on the ferry, in a movie theater, on a plane. Irina knits one project and thinks about the next one. “It’s really fun to create something new,” she says. (Don’t we know it!) “And it’s fun to work in a yarn store—to be among the yarns the whole day, silently talking to the yarns and then using the yarns that answer me!”

Prism Rapport Top

Irina grabbed 2 skeins each of our gorgeous Prism Rapport in colorways Ginger and Mist and a couple of needles, holders and markers, and look what popped out! Magic! This bamboo (66%) and cotton (34%) tank is perfect for summer in the city, or anywhere!

Irina's Origami Top

For those of you who know Berroco's beautiful Origami yarn,

it should be no surprise that Irina could get excited about making us another Yarn Company exclusive- and indeed, in her hands, 7 skeins of color #4372 produced the

following masterpiece:

The simple lace pattern makes for great fun in the lazy summer days, and a knockout statement when you are done! Watch out, other samples.......I am fickle, and this one is calling my name.......

Tiffany Top

Irina loves Filatura di Crosa yarns, and this time she chose theTiffany, (in purple and orange) and decided to show them both off in this amazing asymetric top.

Here it is in the pink, but we carry many colors of this beautifully drapingyarn. Tiffany is a tonal cotton- blend tweed with a hint of metallic shimmer that looks great in every one of the colors we stock.

This sample is size medium and the pattenr calls for 4 skeins of Color A, and 3 of color B.  We have the sample in the store, so come in and take a peek! I guarantee you will find it rough to walk out without wanting the project...

Irina's Scherzo Flappy Hat

Merriam-Webster defines Scherzo as 'a sprightly humorous instrumental musical composition or movement commonly in quick triple time'. And let me tell you, if it were me, I would do a quick triple time to get to The Yarn Company and pick up Irina's Fun Scherzo Hat kit.

Two balls of Filatura di Crosa Zara get paired with 2 balls of Filatura di Crosa Scherzo, and Irina pulls off her slightly humurous composition!

As usual, Irina's patterns are exclusives and come kitted with the yarn purchased for the project. We currently carry Zara ($9.95 each)in more than thirty colors and Scherzo ($15.95) in four, and are offering ten percent off the kit (now $46.62 down from $51.80, until August 15!

Irina's Chiara Scarf

What more can a girl ask for than the Chiara scarf by Irina? Chiara is a gorgeous Lana Grossa yarn, perfect for this shimmering scarf.  A very simple lace pattern is worked on two balls of Chiara (one in each color), and is as fun to knit as it is to coordinate colors from this tempting range...

Irina's Flying Pullover

Irina's Ritratto and Nirvana Scarf

Another exquisite Irina Poludnenko exclusive Pattern for The Yarn Company! Tahki Stacy Charles Rittrato and Nirvana yarns make up this fancy but warm scarf. TMany color combinations.

Irina's Bolero Shrug

Irina Poludnenko grabbed a skein of our exclusive Tempted Hand Painted yarns (Glam Grrl...but you can use the base made exclusively for us called Golden Grrl as well) and two balls of Debbie Bliss Angel (two different colors) and made this incredible shrug, which is truly beautiful. The kit (with pattern) costs $62 before shipping ($12) in the continental United States.
