Something exciting has happened that is a first in New York City.

Spirit Trail Fiberworks yarns arrived.  Those of you who spend time with the online knitting community and frequent festivals probably have some idea how exciting it is for us to have the opportunity to introduce Spirit Trail , and the woman behind it, Jennifer Heverly, to you.  Jennifer likes to quote Robert Frost who said “My object in living is to unite my avocation and my vocation, as my two eyes make one in sight.” Rather than find a work life balance she needed to find a work life synthesis. Each  Spirit Trail yarn grows out of that commitment.  Spirit Trail yarns are handpainted yarns created by Jennifer in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Each batch is unique, and the colorways include varigated, softly varigated, and semi-solids. More to the point, each one is delicious.  And evocative.  Jennifer’s sense of place comes through in each colorway.

When you see this yarn, you suddenly realize that this is the yarn you have been looking for all those times you just pop into the yarn store.  The one that is that special.

In addition to handpainting each skein, Jennifer, a spinner, is deeply knowledgeable about the characteristics of each of the fibers in each of her yarns. Because of this she crafts yarns that balance the best characteristics of each resulting in yarns that are truly greater than the sum of their parts.  Jennifer chooses and creates yarns she likes to use herself, and by purchasing rare breed fibers from small farms she hopes to help these farmers continue their work in ensuring the future of these rare sheep breeds.

Currently, we have Nona and Sunna in stock.  Nona, a two ply lace weight, (named for the Roman goddess who spins the thread of life) is 50% merino, 25% cashmere and 25% bombyx silk (which in contradiction to all laws of mathematics makes it 110% fabulous).

Sunna (named for the Scandinavian goddess of sun and spinning) has a slightly different balance. It is a fingering weight, that is 75% merino, 15% cashmere, and 10% bombyx silk (but peculiarly, also 110% fabulous).

Before now there were two ways for New Yorkers to get Spirit Trail yarns, online or at a festival.  As a carless New Yorker (say it loud, I’m green and proud) festivals can be tricky.  Online is easy, but oh wow, is it fun to walk into the store and see all the colors in vibrant three dimensional life.

SPIRIT TRAIL FIBERWORKS~ Yarns & Fibers to Make Your Spirit Sing ~supplying Yarn & Fiber Enthusiasts since 2003

Jennifer Tepper Heverly graduated from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC with a BA in English Literature and concentrations in Fine Art and Philosophy. For over ten years Jennifer worked in commercial real estate in Washington, DC, first as a Leasing Agent and then as Senior Property Manager responsible for over 1.4 million square feet of office space. Not wanting to leave their first child with a nanny or in daycare, Jennifer left her profession in 1997 to care for her son and then daughter, who was born in 2000.

With small children at home, Jennifer spent the next several years brainstorming on a creative and fulfilling business she could operate from her home. Her desire was to join her avocation and her vocation, as Robert Frost so eloquently wrote: “My object in living is to unite my avocation and my vocation, as my two eyes make one in sight.” Jennifer had learned to knit from her Mother in high school and in 2001 purchased her first spinning wheel. In early 2002 she took a dye workshop with a local friend and realized this could be the business she had been looking for: one which would allow her to work at home and utilize her artistic talents and color sense, as well as the business experience she had gained in her former professional career.

Spirit Trail Fiberworks was launched in early 2003 and has enjoyed steady growth in the years since. These days, Jennifer works to maintain balance in her life between her growing and popular business and her family and growing children. She is the sole dyer and creative force behind Spirit Trail Fiberworks, ably assisted by several friends and her Mother, who help her with prepping, skeining, finishing, shipping and other administrative duties.

 ABOUT OUR YARNS

Spirit Trail Fiberworks specializes in unique, high quality yarns and fibers ~ over 20 yarns and 10 spinning fibers of wool, cashmere, silk, alpaca and other exotic fibers find their way into our dyepots. Yarns and fibers are selected based upon fiber quality and tactile enjoyment: Only those we would enjoy using ourselves find their way into our line of yarns and fibers. Over the last several years we have expanded to include several bases spun especially for us in a luxurious merino-cashmere-silk blend: Nona (heavy laceweight), Sunna (fingering) and Birte (DK weight).

All Spirit Trail yarns and fibers are dyed in small, artisanal batches at Jennifer’s studio and home in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Washfast acid dyes are used to create over 125 colorways, and vinegar as a safe and gentle mordanting agent. Our yarns and fibers are carefully handpainted with soulful attention to detail to ensure beautiful depth color saturation.

Spirit Trail Fiberworks yarns and fibers are all handpainted as “variegated,” “softly variegated” and “semi-solid”. Variegated yarns include 3 to 6 complementary colors and are painted so that transitions between colors are subtle and blended rather than rigid and segmented. Softly Variegated yarns are created using only two colors which are significantly blended together for a very subtle exchange of color. Semi-Solids are dyed with one color, but subtle color changes and tonal variety are created during the dye process to create depth and shading.

Because of the artistic nature of our dye process, variation will occur between dyelots. Colors are mixed and applied by hand in an organic and personal process, and may not be handpainted in exactly the same way each time. Additionally, colorways will look different on different bases due to the varying fiber content of yarn bases and how they react to the dyes (for example, silk reacts quite differently than cashmere).

ABOUT OUR SPINNING FIBERS

The other facet of Spirit Trail Fiberworks is our line of rare breed spinning fibers and luxurious combed top blends. This side of the business sprang directly from a less-than-enjoyable early spinning experience Jennifer had when she tried to spin a bump of very compacted merino combed top. After this experience, she went searching online for other breeds and found the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy of the United States and the Rare Breeds Survival Trust of Great Britain. Amazed at the vast number of sheep breeds in the world and also the fact that so many were listed as endangered, she started contacting farmers and trying out different breeds. Since 2003, Jennifer has formed relationships with farmers in the United States and other countries to obtain fibers from their rare breed flocks, and it is our pleasure to bring these fibers to handspinners and in this small way support the continued existence of these rare sheep breeds. Our rare breed spinning fibers inventory changes on a regular basis, based upon the availability of fleeces we obtain from these farmers. Some rare breed fibers are dyed by Jennifer and then processed into multi-colored roving, while others are processed in natural colors and blended with various luxury fibers.

Most of our luxury combed top blends are purchased from fiber wholesalers, although occasionally we are able to purchase raw fiber in quantities large enough to have them processed into combed top. All combed top blends are handpainted by Jennifer using the same procedures as those used for yarn. Fiber blends are selected based upon the fibers we like to use and spin and include such wonderful combinations as merino-cashmere-silk, alpaca-silk, merino-cashmere, merino-cashmere-angora, merino-yak-silk, polwarth and superwashed bluefaced Leicester.
