Midnight in Manhattan

Midnight in Manhattan! Deep and dreamy as a summer night, this exquisite blue promises to satisfy through the cold winter months, and beyond. Midnight in Manhattan conjures the wilderness beyond the rooftops, oceans of sky and imagination! This is a beautifully variegated yarn with endless possibilities. Created exclusively for the Yarn Company, Midnight in Manhattan will be available in all of the store’s Madtosh bases: fingering-weight Tosh Sock and beloved Merino Light, ever-popular Tosh DK, delicious Pashmina, Merino, Prairie, Tosh Lace, the gorgeous worsted-weight Tosh Vintage, and fun and funky Chunky, which made its debut in June.

Did you know? Madelinetosh was founded by Amy Hendrix, an art history major who dyed some yarn in her kitchen. A photograph of her unusual yarn on Flikr drew attention, and, at the request of others, she started selling it on Etsy in 2006. Amy named the company after her creative great-grandmother (an avid knitter and hand-spinner as well as the mother of nine children), who left behind a trunk of beautiful yarn for Amy to discover.

Inspired by the quality of her great-grandmother’s handspun yarns, Amy gave Madtosh’s yarns an overtwist; they are just as soft as other modern Merino superwash yarns, but the overspin makes them more durable, more versatile, and less likely to pill.

However, as anyone will tell you, what makes Madtosh’s yarns irresistible is their rich, amazing colors. Amy and her husband, John Ballard, who quit his career in electrical construction to join Madtosh as Operations Manager, have created 270 different colorways. Midnight in Manhattan is their 14thcustom colorway, and took weeks of experimenting and 12 skeins of yarn to reach perfection. John writes: " When we were creating the custom color I used three high resolution photos for guidance. All were night pictures facing east in large urban environments. One of NYC (not sure of location), London in Hyde Park, and Berlin. The characteristic that I tried to catch was that all large cities project large amounts of light upward. This causes the sky to be a dark blue on the lower horizon and closer to black on upper horizon."

As you know, our other exclusive colorway was designed by Stephen West, choreographer, designer, and author of the Westknit Book series, who uses Madelinetosh yarns in many of his designs. Stephen's Westknits Shawl Club was done in partnership with The Yarn Company, and Stephen used 'Stephen Loves Tosh' in Tosh Merino Light for Sharktooth. It is such a glorious colorway that we had to stock it across all out favorite Madelintosh bases!
